The annual event in the field of polar scientific research-the China Symposium on Polar Science, was successfully held in Tongji University from October 7th to 9th, 2019. The annual meeting is co-sponsored by the Polar Research Institute of China and the Chinese Society for Oceanography, and undertaken by Tongji University and the Chinese Society for Oceanography. The State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Reuse of Tongji University and the Polar Research Institute of China are the organizers of the conference. The field of exchange involves polar basic scientific research, polar engineering technology and polar strategic policies. More than 400 representatives from more than 100 institutions attended the conference and exchanged more than 200 papers. Chen Lianzeng, Chairman of the Chinese Society for Oceanography, Gu Xianglin, Vice President of Tongji University, and leaders and experts from relevant departments such as the Ministry of Natural Resources of the People’s Republic of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Sun Yat-sen University attended the meeting. Chen Lianzeng, Chairman of the Chinese Society for Oceanography, Gu Xianglin, Vice President of Tongji University, and Qin Weijia, Director of the Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration, made speeches at the conference. Academician Wang Pinxian of Tongji University, Researcher Yang Huigen of Polar Research Institute of China, Researcher Zhou Hongyan, Professor Cheng Xiao of Sun Yat-Sen University, Chinese Academy of Sciences Researcher Li Zhongqin from Northwest Institute of Eco-Environmental and Resources made a special report.
After the conference, a group report was carried out. The conference reported on 11 research directions which were conducted extensive academic exchanges, including the evolution of cryosphere snow and ice under the background of global change, polar marine environmental changes and ecological effects, the occurrence of emerging polar pollutants and the impact of ecological environment, polar biological resources: basic understanding and utilization potential, Polar paleo-ocean and paleo-climate evolution and its global impact, the impact of solar wind energy injection on the atmosphere and space environment of the polar region, Antarctic astronomy research, polar policy and "Ice Silk Road", polar strategy and scientific key field seminar, polar station based on the academic and development seminars on ecological environment and polar surveying and mapping geographic information technology and applications, showing the Antarctic ice sheet process and climate change, the characteristics and changes of new polar pollutants, marine paleoclimate records, Aurora and ionospheric characteristics and changes, polar ecosystem and resource characteristics, polar remote sensing and geodetic technology, polar environmental monitoring technology, and the latest achievements in the research fields of China's polar strategy. The polar region is not only a "strategic Xinjiang region" related to national interests, but also an important field of scientific understanding of the earth system. The China Symposium on Polar Science is the most important large-scale academic conference in the field of polar science. It provides a platform for academic exchanges and cooperation for polar workers at home and abroad, and plays an increasingly important role in our country's polar science undertakings. This year is the 15th China Symposium on Polar Science, which coincides with the year of our country's "14th Five-Year Plan" plan for polar expeditions. The meeting is based on understanding the polar regions, protecting polar regions, and using polar regions. It closely follows the strategic layout of the "Outline of Natural Resources Science and Technology Innovation Development Plan", contrasts the "two unifications" responsibilities of natural resource management, and focuses on major issues in the field of polar scientific research. It discussed the key areas and development directions of our country's future polar research, gathered outstanding talents, and had achieved a series of fruitful results.
